UPI Autopay or eNACH for School Fees?

Both automate recurring fees, but they differ in how mandates are approved, what amounts they suit and how failures behave. That decides which fits your institution.

Both need a mandate, but the experience differs

A mandate is the payer's standing authorisation to debit their account under agreed conditions. UPI Autopay mandates are approved inside the parent's UPI application, typically in under a minute. eNACH mandates are authorised through net banking or debit-card verification and can take longer to register.

For institutions collecting from a large parent base, that setup difference is significant. A faster mandate journey usually means a materially higher completion rate.

Amount profile is usually the deciding factor

UPI Autopay suits smaller, frequent instalments and has per-transaction limits, with higher-value debits requiring additional authentication depending on current ecosystem rules. eNACH is generally the better fit for larger term or annual fees debited directly from a bank account.

Many institutions end up offering both: UPI Autopay for monthly instalments, eNACH for term fees. Confirm which rails your payment partner actually supports for your account before designing the plan.

Plan for failures, because they are normal

A debit can fail for insufficient funds, a revoked or expired mandate, a bank-side error or a limit breach. Neither rail guarantees collection.

Decide in advance how many retries you attempt, over what window, and when a case moves to manual follow-up. Communicate the retry schedule to parents so a second attempt does not look like a duplicate charge.

Communication and consent

Parents should receive the required pre-debit notification and be able to revoke a mandate through the supported channel. State the fee purpose, the amount logic and the debit dates when the mandate is created rather than at first debit.

Never ask a parent for a UPI PIN, card PIN, CVV or OTP. No legitimate collection process requires your staff to hold those.

Choosing for your institution

If most fees are monthly and parents are comfortable with UPI, start with UPI Autopay for the smoother mandate journey. If fees are large, termly, and paid from a family bank account, eNACH is usually more appropriate.

Availability of either rail depends on the contracted partner and your approved account. Any zero-convenience-fee arrangement must match your signed commercials rather than a general expectation.

Key takeaways

  • UPI Autopay mandates complete faster; eNACH suits larger, less frequent fees.
  • Match the rail to your amount profile, and consider offering both.
  • Define a retry policy and tell parents about it in advance.
  • Never collect a UPI PIN, card PIN, CVV or OTP from a parent.
